One Room Challenge – Week 2: Upcycling Guest Bedroom Furniture

Welcome to Week 2 of the One Room Challenge!

This week has been all about sanding and painting our furniture as my goal for this project is to re-use all the furniture I already have. If you have seen my mood board for this project you will also know that the feel for the room is “light” and “airy”. If you missed it, check it in my Week 1 blog here.

To achieve the light and airy look I went with a very bright white paint color which I have used throughout my house for the kitchen cabinets and all the trim. Before priming and painting furniture we sanded a lot.

You can see here the nightstand on the left that is sanded vs the one on the right that is not. Our RYOBI sander is one of the best purchases we have made in the tool department. We have used it on multiple project that would have been a nightmare without it.

After a primer and my favorite Bejamin Moore white color Chantilly Lace, the nightstands and bed look like they are brand new. I spray painted the nightstand knobs gold with Rust-Oleum All Surface Pure Gold spray paint. If you have never used this product, it’s AMAZING! It beats having to purchase all new hardware and it makes adding gold accents effortless. They have a variety of colors to choose from. I have used the silver and white colors other projects.

While I have been looking forward to making everything in our guest room bright and airy I was surprised when I saw this moody bedroom. It was love at first sight. There is something about this color that my gut is telling me I should go with it. After another trip to a Paint Showroom conveniently located next to my office here in Chicago, I decided to incorporate this color as an accent wall color with blush pink/mauve stencil design. Who knows, by the end of the project I might have more than one wall paint with this lovely color.

For those of you who are curious about this greenish-blue, the color is Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green.

While I thought I will be spending majority of my upcoming weekend painting bedroom walls, we received an unexpected visitor that will need to stay in our guest bedroom for a week. So major change of plans.

This is what I expect to accomplish this week instead.

• Remove closet door and add trim and paint door.
• Order Curtains and Curtain Rods
• Find a painting for the accent wall
• Look for possible rugs
• Transform an old dining room chandelier into something I can use of this room.

The chandelier I’m working with looks like this.

I’m going to try to get is change into something more like this gold one. My idea is to spray paint it gold, remove the sconce, and convert the bulbs from medium base to candelabra. I have never tried this before so this is going to be a fun project to attempt.
