One Room Challenge – Week 1: DIY Guest Bedroom

Alright, it’s happening! I’m exciting to announce that I will be participating in my very first One Room Challenge. I came across this Challenge a few months ago and drawn to its purpose of inspiring and motivating everyone who participate to finish a room in 6 weeks. If you are already interested, you can read more here.

For the next six weeks my husband and I will be transforming our guest bedroom. As you can see below it really needs some love.

The furniture is from our previous condo which looked fine there because it had the mid-century modern style throughout. In this room, I think the furniture is way too dark so we will be painting all of it a lighter color.

The room has two windows. One to the side of the bed as you can see above and one next to the closet.

In order to get a feel for the color scheme I will be utilizing and to get a better sense of how the finished space will look, as well as what pieces we may need to buy or re-purpose to create a well balanced space, I created a mood board. This mood board really helps visualize the theme of the room.

I always knew I wanted to add this mauve color into this space but once I started adding items to my mood board I was surprised to find that I also like this dark bluish-gray. This color does not feel safe to me because I’m drawn to colors that are light and bright but I think this darker color really adds that pop and interest to the space.

Mood boards are also great time savers as you can try the pieces out in your virtual room without committing to buying them first!

While I will probably not go with the exact pieces from my mood board as my goal for this project is to use as many items in the house that I already have, it gives me clear direction as to how I may re-purpose old pieces like the furniture already in this room.

Join me in this exciting process! I will be posting about this project every Thursday until completion. Make sure to follow me on instagram as well @design.playbook
